Project Description

RothLochston completed the mechanical works associated with the construction of the new vertical lift bridge in Placentia, NL. The specialized mechanical work was a significant undertaking for RothLochston, as the Sir Ambrose Shea Lift bridge is the only vertical lift bridge in Newfoundland and Labrador, and one of only a few in Canada. The scope included the fabrication, supply and installation of the span drive machinery, counterweight sheave assemblies, counterweight rope assemblies, span lock machinery and centering devices, live load supports, and guides. The RothLochston team delivered the bridge while maintaining a high level of safety and quality. The project is a significant infrastructure upgrade in the community, and will provide improved commuting, both by land and sea, for many years.

Project Challenges

This was a very unique project.
At a height of approximately 28 meters the installation of the span drive machinery and counterweight sheave assemblies in the machinery space to very tight tolerances proved challenging.
Our team developed procedures to install and align mechanical components.
The bridge successfully opened to the public on September 23rd, 2016.
