Project Description
Design, supply, fabrication, and erection of surge tanks at several Newfoundland Power hydro generating plants throughout the province including Tors Cove, Rattling Brook, Sandy Brook, Petty Harbour and Horsechops. These surge tanks are unique structures ranging in height from 200ft to 260ft. Connected to the penstock these tanks control the surge created on the system when the demand increases or decreases on the turbine.
Project Challenges
These surge tanks and structures are dynamic systems to design and often present challenging constructability issues due to their location, typically on steep inclines, inline with the penstock.
These project are typically completed, from design to commissioning, in seven months.
The biggest challenge was to lower the project costs by eliminating the crane to build the tank in situ on the structure. Our team developed a plan to erect the structure, build and install the surge tank at ground level, and then lift the tank into place at 200ft with air tuggers.
